Ordinary
methods for measuring soil compaction do not provide data on the
desired engineering properties for design, such as density versus
stiffness/modulus.
In addition, usual methods are slow, labor intensive, dangerous,
and/or of uncertain accuracy.
As a result, sites are often under-sampled, causing inadequate
compaction to go undetected. Or, feedback is received too late
for cost effective correction of problem areas.
To ensure acceptance and avoid costly rework, designers may over
specify and contractors may over compact in order to compensate
for the variability of the finished product, resulting in lowered
efficiency and unnecessary cost.
The Stiffness Tester is a faster, safer, and cost effective means
of compaction testing than any other competing method. By
instituting a stiffness measurement and quality control program,
the standard deviation of soil compaction can be reduced by 30%.
A contractor
may then use less compactive effort (number of compaction passes),
reducing the average soil stiffness by 10%, while maintaining
the passing tests at 95%accuracy. Gauge stores measurements that
can be transferred to a printer or computer via infrared interface
RS232 port. Battery operated. Includes six "D" sized
batteries, instructions, calibration accessories and transit case.
